【ビーチボーイズのペットサウンズ】全11曲を和訳

『Pet Soundsは本質的にはブライアンのソロ作品と呼べる。彼はバンドとのツアーを取りやめ、腕利きのスタジオ・ミュージシャンたちと共に一人、スタジオでの録音に集中した。

ブライアンは、ビーチ・ボーイズによる美しいハーモニーに、バズ・オルガンやハープシコード、フルートに加え自転車のベルやテルミン、犬笛と言った変わった道具での音響効果を多重録音により付け加え、作品を創り上げた。

またプロの作詞家、トニー・アッシャーを作詞に起用し、曲のイメージを伝え、詞に起こす作業を任せた。従って本作のレコーディングにおいてブライアン以外のメンバーはほぼボーカルとコーラスのみでの参加となっている。wikiより』

トニー・アッシャーは言う「元のアイデアはブライアンから来た。実際の言葉を選んだのは僕だが。僕は彼の翻訳家だった」

全訳してみて気づきましたが、詩が美しいです。オールタイム・ベストアルバムでよく1位を競うマーヴィン・ゲイの「ホワッツ・ゴーイン・オン」は、ベトナム反戦、貧困、警察の横暴、ドラッグ問題、児童遺棄、都市の退廃がテーマですが、「ペット・サウンズ」はラブソングとか生き方だったり、親しみやすい内容がテーマです。

よく「ペットサウンズの凄さがわからない」といわれますが、単純です。歌詞がいいアルバムだった。たとえばジョニミッチェルのブルーは初期ユーミン、ジャクソンブラウン初期は尾崎豊だとすると、ペットサウンズは「さだまさし名曲選」っていうかんじです。

内省的で統一感のある歌詞とサウンドが、永遠の評価を与えた。
