1983年3月発売。ZZトップの「イリミネイター」。
US wikiによるとイリミネイターは1000万枚売れたアルバムだそうです。ZZトップのアルバム総セールスは5000万枚。比較対象としてTOTOでざっくり4000万枚ぐらいです。
83年ごろ僕は洋楽ガチ勢でして、毎週ヒットチャートをノートに書いていました。英語がよく聞き取れないので、2週遅れのFM雑誌で答え合わせしながら。
83年に目立ったのは、シングルではマイコーの「ビリージーン」が7週連続1位。その後だったかなポリスの「見つめていたい」も7週連続1位でした。
アルバムチャートもチェックしていましたが、特筆すべきがZZTOPの「イリミネイター」と、アラバマの「The Closer You Get…」とか「Mountain Music」でした。長期間ランクインのめっちゃロングセール。なんでこれらのアルバムは落ちへんねんって。
当時のラジオDJいわく、これらのアルバムはアメリカのトラックの運ちゃんが好んで聞いていたそうです。サザンロックやカントリーロック。日本だと演歌の八代亜紀やなって思った記憶があります。
ちなみにアラバマはアルバム総売上8000万枚ぐらい。比較対象としてレッチリ、ニルヴァーナ、ポリス、ジャーニーも約8000万枚ぐらい売っています。
「ビルボードの年間アルバムチャート」を確認してみると、イリミネイターは83年が31位。84年が7位でした。83年3月発売ですが84年の方が売れています。マイコー、ヒューイルイス、ライオネルリッチー、ビリージョエル、カルチャークラブ、ヴァンヘイレンに続く7位。8位はポリスです。
「イリミネイター」の歌詞はセクシー系でアホっぽい。プリンスみたいな卑猥さがある。オレのものを舐めてくれとか、顔にぶっかけるぜとか。
こういう歌詞をストレートなロックで歌うと、英語圏の聴衆は爽快感があったのでしょう。日本だとTheピーズの「クズんなってGO」みたいな感じか。
個人的にはZZトップ、トリオロックバンドで一番好きです。次作のアフターバーナーも好きなので、AmazonMusicはもっと音圧上げて欲しいな。
